‘Verity Spott’s new book dances against Covid-time and its dire shut-down of life. The poems dance and sing inside and against our ‘confiscated world’, with pain, anger and joy. They want more than survival. ‘I danced in the moon / and the stars and the sun my heart will go on black planet! It will!’ There are collisions and sheerings of multiple genres, lyrical, satirical, ballad, prose. Coronelles calls up singular energies inside our terrible, imposed lock-down. It doesn’t want to be safe or knowing or correct. ‘This thing inside, it killed us: Fuck balconies Fuck the world / reject. Reject. Reject.’ The language is both extremely tender and unashamedly violent. It is not afraid to go all the way inside the negative. With anger and love it makes a space for life:

Let our spite rise in love
‘the new normal’
fresh horrors, what was once ‘austerity’,
harder, faster,            with attention
to the detail            of the body,
tracking it through the world, closing its magnetically sealed
doors its airtight perimeters; let our spite
rise in love, in tender revenge .’
– William Rowe
